Neil Krishnan Black Belt

My name is Neil Krishnan. I have been practicing Kung Fu for around 10 years now. Kung Fu has taught me a few important skills: perseverance, courage, hard-work, and so much more. I hope that it remains an important part of my life far into the future.

I have grown tremendously through Kung Fu in terms of diligence and determination.

Initially when I was doing Kungfu, I wasn't taking it seriously. I would miss lessons often, saying I had too much homework, and I would not work on my forms well. I saw my peers who were originally at my level advance farther and farther beyond me. Initially, I thought I could catch up and everything would be fine, but nothing changed.

Finally, as I entered high school, I knew something had to change or I would never achieve my goals. So, I stopped missing classes, and pushed myself harder. Through this diligence, I noticed a lot of change. I was progressing faster than ever, and I also felt so much better physically. Thus, Kungfu taught me how to be diligent, and I have applied this to my studies and my other extracurriculars.

I have an older brother named Sidhart Krishnan who previously received his black belt, and out of all of the moves I saw him do, the one that stood out was the pop-up. It seemed like a move out of one of the martial arts movies I saw like Kungfu panda. But when I started learning it, all I could do is just flop on my back. As I progressed: from purple belt to blue belt, to brown, to orange, nothing changed.

But I kept pushing at it. I grew stronger. I took the exercises in Kungfu more seriously. I tried to get the form right for the pop up by rolling back farther and straightening out my legs. During my red-black belt testing, as we were going through the basic movements and came to the dreaded front roll push up pop up, l was finally able to do it, and even landed on my feet.

What I was proud was not the actually being able to do a push up. It was that I kept pushing, just trying to improve myself a little bit farther every single day until I finally did it.

Thank you so much for this opportunity. I would especially like to thank my parents for paying for these classes and dropping my off every single week.

I would also like to thank both shifus for helping me grow. I know that there is a lot more for me to do in Kungfu, and I hope to continue into the future.
